Privacy Collection Notice

for Melbourne Bioinformatics workshops and events

The collection of personal information by the University of Melbourne (University) is governed by the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) and Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) and, to the extent that they apply to our activities, the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (which relates to the processing of personal information of individuals located in the European Economic Area), (together, Privacy Laws).

The University is committed to protecting your privacy and processing your personal information fairly and lawfully in compliance with the Privacy Laws and the GDPR, as applicable.

Your personal information is being requested for the purposes of managing your workshop registration and communicating with you about your experiences with our training workshops. The University is using third-party service provider, Eventbrite, to assist in managing registrations for these activities. As part of the registration process, Eventbrite will collect and manage your personal information and share it with the University. The information may also be used by the University or Eventbrite for analysis, quality assurance and planning purposes.

Information you provide to the University, or which Eventbrite collects and subsequently shares with the University, will be used by authorised University staff for the purpose for which it was collected. Data collected through this registration form will be transferred outside Australia to an entity operating under equivalent privacy obligations. We will not disclose your personal information to anybody else without your consent, unless we are authorised or required to do so by law.

The University stores personal information in both electronic and paper-based form and does not segregate or treat personal information differently based on your geographical location. We take all reasonable steps to ensure that the information we hold is accurate and complete, and that appropriate technical and organisational security measures are in place and maintained to protect personal information that is transmitted, stored or otherwise processed, from accidental or unlawful destruction, misuse, loss, alteration, unauthorised access or disclosure.

We will only retain your personal information for as long as required for the purpose for which it was collected and in accordance with our legislative obligations. This information will then be securely destroyed in accordance with the University’s retention and disposal authority.
